NFC pilot meets expectations
The past six months consumers in Leiden have made 25.000 transactions using NFC payments pilot in the Dutch city of Leiden. The mobile payments pilot started exactly one year ago. The Leiden consumers testing NFC payments said to be surprised by the accessibility NFC provides.
September last year three major banks ABN Amro, Rabobank and ING and KPN, MasterCard and the city of Leiden started the NFC pilot by handing out 1000 NFC equipped mobile phones. The first three months consumers made 2000 transactions per week for an amount about 20.000 euro’s per month.
“The results are very satisfying”, says Jeroen Verrijdt, director of Payments and Savings at Rabobank. “The new payments system has been used frequently providing us a good insights and backgrounds in what consumers and entrepreneur wish and prefer if it comes to mobile payments.”
The NFC pilot has ended officially. It’s up to the banks to provide their consumers extended forms of NFC payments. Leiden retailers till offer the possibility to pay with NFC. ABN Amro and Rabobank have issued to continue the contactless and mobile payments case.
